Akwa United manager, Zarachy Baraje, is confident his side will break their victory drought this weekend against Gabros to secure their first three points of the season.
Baraje said his side has put behind it its disappointing start to the season and has resolved to grab a crucial win in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Sunday.
The Promise Keepers have only secured a single point from possible nine after three games.
After an inspired draw in Aba against Enyimba International on season’s opening day, the team lost its first home game of the season to FC Taraba, slumped to an away defeat to Sharks and surrendered their FA Cup trophy to city rivals, Akwa Starlets.
The coach understands it would rub off negatively on the fans should Akwa United flounder in front of the home fans a second time.
Baraje said: “We cannot afford to slip at home again.
“We must secure three points on Sunday.
“My players are in top shape and we have been working seriously for the past few days to ensure stability.
“No injury worries at the moment.
“We hope for a win on Sunday.”
Baraje said the return of first choice keeper, Olufemi Kayode, to the squad, after serving his suspension, has strengthened the defence to support the attackers secure results that will boost their quest for a continental ticket as the season progresses.
Baraje, who parted ways with Enyimba few matches into last season, is tasking Akwa United fans to rally behind the team and give the players the much needed support and motivation to achieve meaningful results.
He said: “The fans should understand with us.
“I picked up this team, three weeks to start of the season.
“We are trying our best to ensure the players blend and get to understand each other.
“We have a lot of new players who are trying hard to fit into the team.
“We believe that we will get better in the near future.”
The Uyo-based side will be without key defender, Godspower Igudia, who is suspended.
Hamza Onwuemenyi has been penciled as his replacement, while striker Aniekpeno Udoh has been declared fit for the fixture.
