Flight operation of Air France was on Wednesday disrupted by the National Union of Air Transport Employees over outsourcing of the airline’s document control unit to a private firm.
The union’s Chairman, Lagos State Chapter, Igene Paul, while leading the picketing of the office at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, said the action was due to the airline’s unfair labour practice.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the airline had on Wednesday handed over its Document Checking Unit to a private firm, Checkport Security Nigeria Limited.
Spokesperson for the airline, Olufunmilayo Ojesina, who defended the airline’s decision in a statement issued in Lagos, said the move was in line with international practice.
Igene, however, vowed that the union would continue the picketing until the decision was reversed.
He said the move by the airline to sack those working with the document checking unit while negotiations were still ongoing was against labour law.
The union’s chairman said it would frustrate the airline’s operation until it stayed action, pending the resolution of all issues between the union and the management.
Igene said the airline had engaged in unfair labour practice by paying certain funds into the accounts of the workers it intended to declare as redundant.
