Akwa United FC Chairman, Obong Isong Isang, has resigned.
Isang’s resignation is coming six weeks into the new season.
In a letter made available to The Eagle Online, the former House of Assembly member, who has been in charge of the Uyo side for a record eight years, said his resignation is based on health grounds.
Accepting his resignation on behalf of the team, Secretary of the club’s Board, Uko Akpabio, thanked Isong for his contributions to the development of the team, assuring supporters of the club that his departure will not affect the club’s performance.
In the interim, the club’s Board has unanimously appointed Akparawa Nse Ubeh as acting chairman.
Until his appointment, Ubeh was the vice chairman of the club.
Addressing supporters at the Uyo Sports Stadium on Friday evening, the acting chairman said the club’s dream of securing a continental ticket at the end of the season remains the key focus of the management.
Ubeh said: “We are focused on competing with the big teams and securing a continental slot at the end of the season.
“I want to use this medium to appeal for calm on the part of our supporters.
“The best is yet to come.
“The team will bounce back.”
Ubeh hinted that plans are already underway to secure the services of players with vast experience to improve the performance of the team.
Akwa United were on Wednesday thrashed 4-0 away to Giwa FC in Jos.
The team host neighbours, Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt in Uyo, in a Week Six fixture of the ongoing 2014/15 Glo Premier League.
