State governors in Nigeria have been tasked to give maximum support to security agencies to ensure their success in the fight against insurgency in some parts of the country.
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State made the call while speaking to reporters after a meeting of the Governor Jonah Jang-led Nigerian Governors’ Forum in Abuja.
Akpabio said as governors, they were deeply concerned about the security challenges in some parts of the country and charged Nigerians to see the security of the country as their collective responsibility.
While calling on security agencies to rise to the occasion, Akpabio urged state governors to redouble their support to the security agencies, especially in the areas of intelligence gathering and policing.
Answering questions from journalists, the Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, expressed support for the ongoing National Conference and called on delegates to place national interest above all other considerations.
On his part, the Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Willie Obiano, who was attending the meeting for the first time promised that he is determined to work with the forum to ensure the sustainability of democratic tradition.
In a communique at the end of the meeting, the forum condemned the recent killings of Nigerians in some parts of the North and sympathized with the government and people of the affected states.
The communique, which was read to journalists by the Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, commended President Goodluck Jonathan for convening the National Conference and called on Nigerians to support it.
While welcoming the new Governor of Anambra State into its fold, the forum also felicitated its Chairman, Governor Jonah Jang, on his 70th birthday.
The meeting, which lasted for about five hours, was attended by 11 governors and four deputy governors.
