The Acting Governor of Adamawa State, Umar Fintiri has been cleared to contest the governorship bye-election slated for October 11.
The Appeals Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headed by James Manager, on Sunday cleared Fintiri to run.
It will be recalled that the election screening committee headed by Ibrahim Mantu, had on Saturday disqualified the Acting Governor, citing Section 191 (2) of the nation’s constitution.
But, a speaking with newsmen on Sunday, James Manager, however contended that the section quoted by the screening committee chairman does not in any way rule Fintiri out of the race.
“We looked at the whole issue, the Nigerian Constitution, the Electoral Act and the PDP Constitution and have come to the conclusion that the provisions of the constitutions does not affect the applicant.“Section 191 (2), does not affect the applicant to participate in the election. This decision was unanimously taken by us. We are issuing a provisional clearance to the applicant.
“Almost all of us are meeting the acting governor for the first time and the decision to clear him was taken based on what was before us,” the Appeals Panel chairman stated.
