The Commissioner of Police in Niger State, Abubakar Marafa, has said the Command arrested 326 armed robbers, bandits and kidnappers suspected to be involved in various major crimes across the state.
Marafa said on Tuesday at the command headquarters during a press briefing in Minna that the constant raid of criminal hideouts, deployment of safer highway patrols and pin down points are strategies used to combat the crime.
According to him: “We arrested these suspects between January this year and early this month.
“At least 100 of the suspects were arrested for electoral offences.
“Two hundred and two suspects who were involved in major crimes have been prosecuted in court.
“The nine notorious armed robbery suspects terrorising Minna-Suleja Road have been arrested and we recovered two fabricated AK47 riffles with 21 rounds of live ammunition; one single barrel, one dane gun, 40 arrows, two vehicles and two motorcycles.
“Other arrests included two armed bandits terrorising Gauraka-Zuba axis, whose case have been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja as directed.”
The COMPOL added that in all the successful raids, which included arrests of notorious armed robbery, kidnapping and cattle rustling suspects, the Command was able to recover 10 fabricated AK47 rifles with 155 rounds of live ammunition, 40 arrows, three locally made guns, two catapults and various shapes of machetes.
Marafa further disclosed that the command also arrested seven kidnappers and six cattle rustlers, thereby recovering 90 cattle, 10 sheep suspected to be stolen from Kebbi and Zamfara States.
While responding to questions on how the Police can checkmate dealers of arms and ammunition, Marafa assured that efforts are ongoing to trace the manufacturers and their syndicates, adding that it is based on intelligence.
Furthermore, in the period under review, five vehicles and seven motorcycles that the suspects used during their operations were confiscated by the state command.
