No fewer than 25 persons were killed on Sunday when gunmen, suspected to be members of the dreaded sect, Boko Haram, stormed a market in Borno State.
Several others were injured during the attack while the gunmen left with foodstuffs and others goods.
The attack took place at Daku village in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
The gunmen, dressed in Army camouflage, were said to have arrived at the market at about 11am in Toyota Hilux van and on motorcycles, armed with guns, explosives and other dangerous weapons.
They started shooting sporadically and setting shops in the market ablaze after taking foodstuffs and other goods out of them.
A trader at the market, Bulus Gadzama, told newsmen: “I have to give thanks to God almighty for sparing my life today.
“I just finished my church service at about 10am.
“I then proceeded to the market after dropping my Holy Bible at home and all of a sudden after displaying my wares, we started hearing sounds of gunshots and explosions, which forced everybody to scamper for safety.
“It was when the attackers fled before some of us summoned courage to go to the scene of the incident.
“It was then we realised that over 15 people were killed.
“Most of the shops in the market were set ablaze after looting food items.”
Muhammed Gava, a member of the Nigeria Vigilante Group in Maiduguri, who spoke based on reports he got from Askira Uba, said: “They actually targeted food and other supplies during the attack, but they also shot at the people sporadically, which led to the death of about 25 people and injuring many others, according to the reports of our vigilante personnel who later went to the market.”
The police was yet to confirm the development as at press time.
