Twenty persons sustained serious injuries in a multiple vehicular accident that occurred on the Onitsha-Owerri Road in Anambra State on Saturday.
The multiple vehicular accident, which took place at about noon at Oraifite area, involved eight vehicles and a tricycle.
The vehicles included three commercial buses, four cars, a truck and a commercial tricycle.
The Federal Road Safety Corps Unit Commander in Oraifite, Hyginus Ezugwu, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria in Onitsha.
Ezugwu said the incident occurred due to high speeding and some drivers involved not applying defensive driving tact.
He said officers and men of the unit had taken those wounded to a nearby hospital, adding: “We thank God no life was lost as a result of the incident.
“We have also moved our heavy duty tow truck to clear the road.
“It was primarily caused by high speeding even when the drivers knew they were on a slippery road due to the rain.
“Those that followed the first vehicle in that multiple vehicular accident did not apply defensive driving.
“However, soon we would clear the road and decongest the backlog of traffic that had built-up.”
NAN reports that the incident caused traffic hold-up for some hours within Oraifite axis of the road.
